While I've heard many criticize Bryan Singer's Superman Returns, I don't mind admitting that I'm extremely fond of it, even if it is relatively short on action. Seeing Brandon Routh take over so confidently from Christopher Reeve has been both exciting and moving for me. I love the reverential nature of the movie, which pays homage to Donner's original vision for Superman 1 and II. That vision was so definitive that a new movie (if it really wanted to connect in the same way) had to try and continue the same path, instead of furrowing a new one just for the sake of it.
Of course, Donner never got to finish Superman II back in 1980 because he was fired by the producers (surely one of the craziest ever decisions in Hollywood history). But thanks to the persistence of the fan community, Warner Bros. have finally let him go back to (and restore) the footage he originally shot. So 26 years later we finally get to see (most of) his incredibly different version, which most enjoyably sees Marlon Brando resprising the role of Superman's Father, Jor-El.
