Kelly Rowland goes on a tour of Africa...

...and MTV asked if I'd like to design the microsite to go with it; kellyrowlandafrica.com. Miss Rowland is an official ambassador for the Staying Alive Foundation, and went on a short tour in June to highlight AIDs awareness issues across South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya.

The initial design went down really well with both MTV and the team working directly with Kelly, and in actual fact evolved very little throughout the project. I took a slick and bright graphical route that I felt would suit Kelly's R'n'B credentials, and then combined and contrasted that with an earthy palette of browns and landscape photography which bring warmth and a natural balance. The idea was to get a sense of both the scale of Kelly's fame, against the scale of the landscape, and implicitly through that hint at the scale of the crisis. Hopefully I've managed to achieve that to some extent!

I'd like to thank Nick Sidhu for building the site and making it editable by the client, and Alex Amelines for his assistance on the animation.

Computer Arts Projects 113: Artwork Featured

Computer Arts Projects kindly featured a few recent pieces of mine in their Illustration issue which hits newsagent shelves this week. It's funny seeing these on one page together, I hadn't realised I was going through a blue period!

Also, some of you may notice that the Old Snake illustration isn't quite the same as the one you can see online here. At the time the magazine went to press, I hadn't quite decided whether to use the eyepatch or not, and the colour contrast was a lot softer. But I'm still happy to see this version in print, even if it's not the final treatment.
