Flyer for Edgar Wright's Halloween Double Bill in LA

On Friday 31st October and Saturday 1st November, Edgar Wright will be at the New Beverly cinema in LA, where they're showing Shaun of the Dead, followed by his own Halloween movie choice, RIKI-OH: The Story of Ricky. Which by the way, is an ultraviolent martial arts horror movie from Hong Kong, based on a Japanese Manga.

As the cinema website explains, "The New Beverly is LA's premier revival movie theater. Running for 30 years, the New Beverly is proud to bring Los Angeles the finest in independent, classic and foreign films. Every show is a double feature and are all presented on 35mm high quality studio prints."

Edgar was looking to get a flyer produced for his double bill, so naturally I was happy to get involved. Having already done a Shaun of the Dead piece a few years ago, I wanted to try something fresh, and got the idea of integrating some hand-drawn type into the illustration. Not that I'm claiming to be the first to do this(!), but it just seemed like a nice way to create a truly bespoke flyer, whereas 'in this day and age' it's very easy for someone to knock up a photoshop collage of various found artefacts.

Anyway it was a blast, and I hope you enjoy it. I'm pleased with how it turned out, and hope I get to explore the theme somewhere else at some point. You can also see it on Edgar's MySpace blog. Many thanks to the folks who've left nice comments there about the flyer, and of course to Mr. Wright for getting in touch in the first place and being open to my concept.

Body Shop Website Wins Gold W3 Award

Just got word that the Body Shop site that I designed for MTV/The Staying Alive Foundation (built and animated by David Terranova), www.moveyourlips.com, has won a Gold at the 2008 W3 Awards. Always nice to hear these things, so thought I'd share the news with you here. The original blog post about the site can be found here.

Freeview Website

Back in the summer I worked with Grand Union, designing and art directing the new Freeview website, which I'm pleased to say has now been launched.

The starting point was the new logo, and the print campaign which had been prepared, specifically the Freeview + artwork you can see with the 3d letters. I felt it would be nice to build a nice 'widescreen' header for the site from the new curved logo shape, and the whole thing grew from that. Please note that the screens below are from the template design I prepared rather than live screenshots, which explains the pixellation on a couple of areas that changed during the course of development. Also, the Heroes image was always just a placeholder.

Profiled by the Sci Fi Channel

It really was very nice of Lyndsey Cooper from the Sci Fi Channel to get in touch and offer to run a feature on me. It's currently linked from their homepage, but you can get straight to it here. I must admit I was expecting to see a paragraph or two, which would have been perfectly cool, but actually she has really done a great job finding the connections in my work over the last few years, and putting quite an extensive piece together. So thank you very much Lyndsey, you rock!
